Lula Filbert has always been an island girl. She was born and raised on Long Island, NY and the many hours spent at the beach left an undying love of all things sand and sea. As an adult she was privileged to spend 17 years of her life living with her family in the archipelago of Indonesia. From the moment she set foot on Java, all 5 senses were immediately engaged in new and wonderful sights, smells, sounds and tastes. Living on this island only cemented her affinity to island living, and she is forever deeply attached to these 2 island worlds.
Lula comes from a family of artists and lovers of art, so during her life on Java, it was a delight to be surrounded by a culture with an amazing and rich art history. She especially connected with the art of batik. The craftsmanship and beauty of this art form continually inspires and informs her artistic style.
